Lake Wawasee - Syracuse, IN
The Syracuse/Wawasee area is home to the largest natural lake in Indiana, Wawasee Lake, as well as other lakes.
Lake Wawasee, as described by the Town of Syracuse, is a beautiful resort town located between the cities of South Bend and Fort Wayne in Indiana, and has 3,060 surface acres with a maximum depth of 77 feet and an average depth of 22 feet. Lake Wawasee drains approximately 24,450 acres. Lake Wawasee has a watershed area to lake area ratio of 8:1, which is very low when compared to other lakes in the area. This low ratio helps to limit the amount of nutrients flowing into the lake, and is most likely a factor in the relatively high water quality. The flushing rate of the lake was found to be 3.4 years.
Lake Wawasee is home to The Syracuse-Wawasee Trail. The Syracuse-Wawasee Trail, while still under construction, promises to be one of the main attractive points to the Syracuse and Wawasee lake area, as it will be a contiguous path around both lakes and will serve as a safe exercise path as well as a beautiful scenic walkway for family excursions to the area parks and for nice walks with friends and neighbors. The Syracuse-Wawasee trail is a community-wide effort, and is a very motivational group objective for the entire area. You can find more information about the Syracuse-Wawasee Trail at syracuseparks.org.

Know and observe boating laws and basic boating courtesies:
* Keep at least 200 feet from shore unless launching or landing.
* Observe "No Wake" zones.
* Yield to boats approaching from my right.
* Yield to boats under sail.
* Equip my boat with proper safety items, including lights and flotation devices.
* Maintain safe and courteous distances from other boats and swimmers.
* Permit no underage operation of my boat.
* Never operate a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
* Assume 100% responsibility for my attitude and behavior.
Dispose of all trash and human waste at proper on-shore facilities.
Help protect environmentally fragile (shallows and wetlands) areas.
When conflict arises, speak to my neighbor, rather than about my neighbor.
